Last night was the first night where Ryan comes back to the office as the new boss. This proved to be very interesting as we saw him awkwardly react to Michael, the new Jim and Pam relationship and then with Kelly.
The opening scene shows Jim and Pam by the vending machines. Pam reminds Jim they are having lunch together and then gives him a peck on the cheek. Toby sees this (remember that Toby secretly has a crush on Pam) and decided to write an office memo regarding PDAs (public displays of affection). Michael gets the memo all confused because no one is yet aware of JAM and questions if the memo is written for him and Jan. Toby admits that the memo is written for JAM. Michael turns to Jim and asks if Jim and Pam are dating and he says yes. The whole office now knows and reacts accordingly.
Next scene is where Dwight brings in a new cat from the farm for Angela. The cat is named Garbage and he is trying to make up for killing Sprinkles. Angela is clearly offended.
Jim and Pam approach Toby to sign a form declaring their office relationship but he tells them it is not necessary. He does this because he is secretly hoping their relationship will end sooner than later.
Enter Ryan who is sporting a new beard and pounding away on his blackberry. Through various interactions with Michael and the rest of the employees, Ryan makes it painfully clear that he is in charge and needs to be treated as Jan was treated. The rest of the episode focuses on Ryan trying to bring technology to Dunder Mifflin via a new website called “Dunder Mifflin Infinity”, all salespeople getting blackberries, and Michael sporting a new GPS system. Michael, being old school, bucks the system by giving gift baskets to potential clients in an effort to gain sales. He also uses the GPS system in his car and when the system told him to make a turn into a lake, he literally drives into the lake in an attempt to prove that technology is not always smarter than people.
Angela breaks up with Dwight and Ryan confronts Kelly who tells him she is pregnant. Ryan asks her to have dinner with him and she interprets that as a date. This is where she admits that she isn’t pregnant and Ryan goes off on her. Ryan also asks Pam to make a new website logo and then he asks her on a date where she respectfully declines and then tells Ryan that she is now dating Jim. Jim is happy to be finally getting back at Ryan because Jim probably would have gotten the job that Ryan ended up with but Jim decided to come back to Scranton to be with Pam. (I have a feeling this is going to somehow come to roost in the next few episodes and might cause some strife between Jim and Pam).  Jim apparently is also annoyed with Ryan’s arrogance. Therefore the admission by Pam that they are dating overjoys Jim and this is seen in the last Jim talking head of the episode.
I felt that this episode started out really great…fast paced, nice interaction with the other characters and lots of funny lines. I do feel that in the last half hour it slowed down quite a bit and there was too much silliness by Michael and Dwight. This was the only thing I feel would make it a negative but overall I give this episode at B+.
A couple of subtle points:
Nice reference to Fire Guy from past season.
Kelly saying she was pregnant when at Phyllis’ wedding she was telling Pam to fake being pregnant for the very same reason.
Creed using all of the ink in the printer to color his hair.Â

People I respect, heroes would be, Bob Hope, um, Abraham Lincoln, definitely. Bono, ah, and probably God - Michael |
